Here's the thing: as I understood, Air City has some kind of Hobgoblin technology in it? (Unless I completely mixed up things...) Well, how about saying that the ones that built Air City is a race where the Hobgoblin sort of degenerated from?
It would be explained more or less like this in a book:

I haven't really thought much about origins with any of my Egoboo stuff. Really, though, that's rather uncharacteristic of me. _________________

The Elder G'nomes built the Palaces. The Catacombs were used for ancient royal kings long ago, but is now closed down by ancient G'nomish wards. Long ago the G'nomes ruled the land, before the humans came. Elves resided in the forests. G''nomes are actually the oldest race and the most ancient one.

Nobody said anything about catacombs . But it must have some connection with the ancient G'nomes (Hence the sporks).
What if the ancient G'nomes build great cities and sky castles soaring in the skies long long ago. But since the great collapse and human colonization, there is only one city left. This city has been overrun with Hobgoblins and through the ages, they have adapted themselves and learned it's secrets (While the G'nomes have long ago lost them). _________________ http://egoboo.sourceforge.net

Sounds good to me, although it doesn't take much of what I'd thought about, but oh well... I won't complain that someone got a better idea. After all, I'm still a newbie compared to you!
How about the Catacombs? Could the "mausoleum" idea still be used?
