Yeah, so I got to thinking...
I mean, I've always been a strong advocate of Egoboo's graphics.
But now that I think about it, Egoboo just looks like an old game, and that may detract people.
The models are fine, and so are the textures. It really does work well. So what can we do?
My idea? Cell-shading. I know it'd probably take a lot of work, but it seems like cell-shading for all the lighting would make it look pretty snazzy.
If it's not SO hard, we could at least try, right?
And I'm not talking about replacing all the textures with more monochromatic ones, and putting black lines around the characters or anything. Just cell-shading. Because, I dunno... I think the lighting system we have now is kinda poor.
I mean, it's not really that bad, it's just that I think we could try something better.
Oh, and, of course, by "we" I mean "not me." Since I can't really help. _________________

Well, I don't think the graphics are that outdated. Its more about gameplay than visual effects. Look at the Wii games for example, their popularity does not lie in the GFX. _________________ http://egoboo.sourceforge.net

I'm not saying it's horrible.
I'm just saying it could be better. _________________

I don't think something like Cel-Shading for Egoboo will be necessary. I think the graphics we have right now look pretty fine, and as Zefz already said, the great success of games doesn't lie in their graphics - it's their gameplay. Let's just compare the Nintendo Wii to the PS3. The PS3 obviously has better graphics than the Wii. However, the Wii has more and much better games available, with better gameplay. That's why actually a large amount of people choose to get a Wii rather than a PS3. Also, of course, the Wii only costs about a third as much as the PS3... _________________ Yes, it's true. I fail. And belive it or not, bgbirdsey has done some fine work on improving some graphics some more. Improved lightning effects, filtering, shading and transparency that gives an imrpoved overall feeling. _________________ http://egoboo.sourceforge.net

Oh, definitely graphics are pretty unimportant. I don't think I've ever picked up a game and been like, "Wow, that looks so cool, I want to buy it!" That's why I have a DS and Wii, but not an Xbox, PS3, PSP, or even a good computer.
Gameplay is what counts, but Egoboo already has that. So I figured... why not try to make it look and sound a little better?
But:

Isn't that just what I was talking about?
I wanna see it! _________________

When I was into SoulFu all Agent of Dread convinced me to change, but I thought it looked weird, but then I started liking it, then I got bored, I agree with Purple.
And not just because he gave me cookies to make me say this!

There aren't really different types of cell-shading. There are just different styles you could have, just like different styles of, say, 2D sprites.
Cell-shading is cell-shading. It's just a lighting technique. More things use it than you may realize.
Also, you're only partly right, AoD; I've actually been here longer than a lot of people, even you!
It just took me longer to get over to the new forum. _________________

Regardless, I've still been around since the Zippy days....
And anyway. What were we talking about originally?
Oh, the lighting. Which has been made gorgeous, from what I can see from screenshots.
