Well I am getting pretty stumped. Let's sum up. You use Windows XP SP2. You have installed 2.6.1 on your pc and also installed both the Redistributable package and the Fix Patch above. You also run the .exe file for Egoboo directly from the game folder (Not using shortcuts).
You could also try to uninstall and reinstall the game. And do any other versions of Egoboo work for you? (Namely 2.22, 2.4.4b and any Development version 2.7.5 or later)

Interesting, only 2.22 works for you.
Are you directly using the executable file in the main egoboo folder?
