Ok, so something is obviously going wrong somewhere, since I'm *really* struggling to get anywhere on the first module, the starter adventurer one.

First, movement is really difficult. When I first begin, up (keypad 8, or moving the mouse forwards) moves my character away from me on the screen, so that his movement depends on where the camera is. I presume this is meant to be how things go. But then as soon as I turn a corner or two, it seems to be reverting to some absolute sense of direction; independent of the camera. This means that I spend half the time trying to work out which way to move the mouse to move in any particular direction.

Second - and this is no doubt compounded by the first - my companions seem to die very quickly. Sometimes the bugs seem to keep knocking them back so they don't get a chance to attack, other times I lose one of them from the screen and shortly get a message saying that they've died. This might be compounded by my movement troubles, but I'd still have assumed that the warrior should be able to take on a bug or two by himself.

Now I'm guessing that I'm being very stupid here, because all the help files suggest that a child should be able to complete this module - I'm 24 and play a lot of computer games, so I'm genuinely baffled as to why I'm finding it so difficult. Any suggestions?

You should change the movement keys and use just the keyboard then (You can change your controls in the "controls.txt" file in the main folder),
or at least not have the movement and camera both linked to the mouse.
It would also be helpful if you told us which version you're using.

Your companions die quickly probably due to your lack of interference in their fights, it's pretty weird that they get killed by mere bugs though, never happened to me.

It's version 2.3.6B.

I'm having the problem with movement even if I only use the keyboard, with the default controls. The problem certainly isn't that one key is doing both movement and camera rotation: The camera stays perfectly still but pressing the forward key will start moving my character left, right will move them forward, down:right, and so on. But as I say, the weird thing is that this doesn't happen from the start, it seems to switch after a while.

And I haven't even gotten past the bugs to see them fight anything else, they're getting beat that hard.

If it's not obvious to you guys what I'm doing wrong, perhaps I should do more testing and see if I can be more precise about the problems.

That sounds a lot like the daze and grog effects.
There are some monsters and weapons that can cause your keys to temporarily get scrambled and mixed up, the problem is, there aren't any such monsters/weapons in the adventurer start.
You'll have to wait for some other replies, the main developers (Zefz and Bgbirdsey) would probably know something.

As for the bugs, are they green, or do they look like big organs?
There was a mixup in the bug type that was supposed to go in the adventurer start, but I don't know if it was fixed in this version...

There are the fiend bugs. They daze you if they attack you. They are not supposed to be in there, but green grub bugs should be there, wait for Zefz make new version, he said he'll fix it in that. And welcome! Very Happy (bad Chainsaw, you didn't welcome him! Evil or Very Mad )

So they are there? Well, that pretty much explains everything.
Try playing some other modules for now, the Elf and the Soldier starters are pretty easy.

The Adventurer Starter is indeed a LOT harder since I accidentally added Fiend bugs instead of normal ones Razz (Those are supposed to be in the abyss module, which is one of the last ones).

As for the Camera mode, try changing the camera mode to something else in the Video Setup. You may want to disable auto rotation if it is that which bothers you. There are three different camera modes.

I haven't heard of such odd control issues before. Are you sure you set up the controls properly?
And then, if you find the controls frustrating, this is what I always use, and I find it vastly superior to the defaults (I actually think these should be the defaults):

Space would probably be a more fitting jump key, but I don't think it allows you to use the spacebar (it's the respawn key as well).
Also, mouse movement is awful. I'm pretty sure nobody uses it.

Anyway, the reason the Adventurer starter is so hard (and I think everyone has told you this several times, but I'll tell you anyway) is because Zefz was testing a new monster and replaced all the grub bugs with something stronger. He forgot to change it for the release.
Another problem you may encounter (though not for a while) is that in the first level of the Abyss, you start right next to the boss (I think Zefz was testing the Soul Carver, a special legendary weapon that deals a ton of damage to him and all other daemonkind; it's not in the game yet)!
Anyhow, all this should be cleared up in the next release.

I use it. It's not that hard when you get used to it.
@Maxaxle: Remember, that's what the main page says as well, maybe he/she didn't check ingame.
Anyway, welcome. You are suffering from the grog and daze effects from the fiend bugs. Hopefully Zefz will release the new version so you don't have to suffer.

I prefer keyboard too.

@Purple: Actually, I had those keys you mentioned set to default before. But Jonathan recommended me to change them back to the old defaults.

I am sorry that I haven't been working on the Archealogist starter lately, I've been busy coding C# (Which I have found to be immensely easier than either C or C++!). I have been learning a lot object oriented programming and better structuring, which should help me better understand the new code bgbirdsey has been working on lately.

aaanyways, the Archeologist will determine the next release Smile I will get working on animating that Jungle Warrior last grip now, which is the biggest part I need to do yet. (in addition to your new skins, names, environment detail and a sound effect).
